BEFORE AND DURING THE CEREMONY
One to five: arrive ready to help the moment land.
- Follow the dress code. Respect the couple's style and theme. When the invitation leaves room for doubt, slightly more formal is safer than casual.
- Arrive on time. Arriving late can disrupt the ceremony, so be in your seat before it begins.
- Keep alcohol out of the ceremony. Civil ceremonies are alcohol free by law, and registrars can refuse to perform the ceremony if that rule is ignored.
- Throw confetti up, not into anyone's face. At Thief Hall the confetti must be dried real flowers. Dissolvable paper confetti is not accepted.
- Give the photographer space. Avoid standing in aisles or moving into the professional's frame during the moments the couple has asked them to capture.
FROM THE RECEPTION TO HOME
Six to ten: be present, mingle and plan the journey back.
- Be present. This is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone for the couple, and an invitation means your attention matters to them.
- Book your taxi early. Local cars are hard to secure on the day, so arrange one at least six weeks ahead. Ride-hailing apps do not reliably cover this part of North Yorkshire. Guests returning to York or Leeds should book a firm at that end.
- Mingle. The couple will be pulled in several directions, and a queue of guests waiting for a private hello can stop the room gathering momentum. Talk to the people around you and help the party find its feet.
- Sign the guest book. It becomes one of the records the couple can return to after the wedding, long after the tables have been cleared.
- Know when an Irish exit is kind. If the couple is having the best night on the dance floor, leaving without interrupting them can be thoughtful.
STAYING AT THIEF HALL
The journey is part of the plan.
Around 50 guests can stay on site across the six cottages and six timber pods, with more possible using additional beds. Thirsk and Northallerton are both around five miles away for guests staying in hotels.
There is ample parking in the main car park and cottage grounds, and coaches have been accommodated many times. The venue itself is on one level, with the car park, ceremony spaces, bar and dining areas all flat and step free.
