What Ceremony options are available?

In England, there are a few options available for your wedding ceremony, depending on your beliefs as a couple.

Civil Ceremonies

Civil ceremonies are officiated by a council registrar. At Thief Hall, we come under North Yorkshire Council. If you opt for this ceremony, you could hold your ceremony at your local register office or, alternatively, book the registrars to come to the venue, where the ceremony can take place in one of our licensed ceremony spaces. To find out more information about this option, please visit the local council website.

At Thief Hall, we do not charge an additional venue fee for holding a civil ceremony; this is included in your venue fee. Council registrar fees are separate.

Religious ceremonies

For a religious ceremony, you can marry at a registered place of worship, depending on your choice of religion. At Thief Hall, we can then hold your wedding celebrations for the rest of your day. We also offer a discount to any couples looking at holding their wedding ceremony at an external religious venue. Ask our team for further information.

Celebrant Led Ceremonies

Some couples might prefer a more personalised ceremony led by an independent celebrant. Alternatively, you could have a friend or family member officiate the ceremony. Members of the Thief Hall team have also stood in as officiants before and are always happy to offer this if preferred.

At the moment, an independent celebrant-led ceremony in England is not legally binding, so couples will need to arrange the legal marriage separately. Some couples opt to do this at their local register office. As our couples have use of the venue for three days, Thief Hall couples can also choose to hold their legal ceremony the afternoon before their celebrant-led ceremony, subject to registrar availability and the usual legal requirements.

No matter which type of ceremony option you’re deciding between, our team of coordinators are happy to help and discuss all the choices available to you.

Small Hall

Our Small Hall can seat up to 120 guests and also provides two setup options depending on which way our couples would prefer to walk down the aisle. With exposed brick walls and a neutral colour scheme, the Small Hall offers the perfect ceremony backdrop for any colour scheme or style you choose for your wedding day.

After your ceremony, we take your guests outside for a confetti throw on the Patio. While your photographer and coordinator choreograph that perfect confetti throw, our team changes the ceremony room into a lounging area or live entertainment space depending on your preference.

We complete the entire room turnaround in minutes. By the time your photos are captured and guests are ready for the drinks reception, the space has changed and the reception drinks are poured ready to start your celebrations.

Big Hall

Our Big Hall combines rustic beams and our beautiful views for the ideal barn venue ceremony. Look out onto the stunning Yorkshire countryside as you say I do.

After you’ve walked down the aisle, our team turns the room around to become the space for your wedding breakfast and later your evening party. Your party really does start here, just footsteps from the bar. The party can carry on into the early hours of the morning, while still offering enough distance to our quieter lounging space for your guests who prefer to mingle and enjoy the celebratory conversation or alternative entertainment. A space for everyone’s style of celebration.

The Orangery

If you’re looking for an intimate elopement wedding or a micro wedding with 30 guests or under, the Orangery is the ideal space. With bifold doors opening onto our panoramic views, the Orangery offers the perfect outside/in feel.

It leads out onto our patio, which is perfect for your confetti throw or group photos after your ceremony and later transforms into the space where your reception drinks can be served.

The Field

If you want to make the most of our legendary North Yorkshire views, then perhaps the Field is the space for you? A stunning way to make the most of our countryside venue. Our licensed outside space really does create beautiful ceremony photos and memories that your guests will be talking about for years to come.

Being slightly wary of our typical English weather, we will always set up a backup inside ceremony option for you and the decision is entirely yours if you choose to get married in our great outdoors. No extra charge, no extra stress, we are simply here to make your dream ceremony option happen for you!

The Patio

We really do believe all our ceremony spaces are beautiful locations for you to say ‘I do’. However, we might have a particular soft spot for our Patio ceremonies. If your guest list is 60 guests or under, and you’d like an alternative outside ceremony option, the Patio might be the space for you.

After your ceremony, the Patio is a gorgeous location for your guests to mingle and enjoy the celebrations. Live musicians and magicians have also entertained guests to kickstart the celebrations off early.
